The enhancement shaman changed a lot from BC to Wrath of the lich king. In Burning crusade the enhancement shaman was not known for the dps output but more for the fact of being what I believe to be to be the best class for 25 man dungeons when in came to support(totems are FTW).
With the beginning of wrath the melee shaman received what I perceive as a massive buff, the totems are raid wide and better then ever(all buffs are now raid wide), long are gone the days of spamming a 2 button rotation(earth shock+storm strike) and of course that changes the entire feel of the enhancement tree plus we do competitive dps now(thanks blizz).
I have no idea how the shaman was like in the classic World of Warcraft, the only thing I know is from other players and videos therefor my data is inacurate and I will not say anything about it, but I'll post this nice video of enhancement PVP in classic wow.
